GRIT
Throughout the Narrative Quest, we will be considering why some people succeed when faced with challenges that cause others to fail.
We will examine literary elements like plot, setting, and characterization. We will think about how factors interact to bring about success or failure.
The question of why some succeed and others fail is a very important one. Throughout your life, you'll face many challenges. As your teachers, we want to help you build the skills that you'll need to overcome the difficulties that you'll experience.
That's why this quest starts by exploring GRIT. We've all read stories or seen movies featuring fictional characters who have GRIT, but it's even more important that we develop GRIT in our own lives. We hope that by helping you explore GRIT, having a GROWTH MINDSET, and being SELF-DIRECTED, we'll help you successfully reach your goals.

GRIT 1: Do you have grit?
In Angela Duckworth's video, you were introduced to the concept of "GRIT." Complete the Grit Scale Google Form below to determine how much GRIT you have. In order to keep track of your score, as you complete the survey, record the number next to each answer you select. Don't let the numbers impact your selection; the survey is only useful if you answer it honestly. At the end of the survey, you'll be instructed to total up your score. Do you have GRIT, or are you mostly GRITLESS?
Your class will have a brief discussion about the results of this survey. Be prepared to reflect on your results.

GRIT 4: Being Self-Directed
In the classroom:
We've already explore how having GRIT and a GROWTH MINDSET can help you be successful. Additionally, some people are SELF-DIRECTED, but others just wait around to be told what to do, or they quit or give up when things get challenging.
To get the most out of this class, it's very important that you develop GRIT in order to be SELF-DIRECTED. During your time in school, you'll have a lot of power to make choices about your own learning. As with most things in life, the more effort you put into class, the more you'll get out of the class.
So what does it mean to be self-directed?
- Why are some people successful when others quit and give up?
- Why do some students seem to get a lot out of their classes, and other students learn very little?

So what does it mean to be self-directed?
- In Classroom, open the assignment Narrative Step 4 - Self-Directed Student Reflection. (Complete this as a PDF).
- Read the list of behaviors of self-directed students.
- As you read, rate how strongly you demonstrate each behavior. If you think you're VERY STRONG at this behavior, give yourself a 3. If you think you SOMETIMES demonstrate the behavior, give yourself a 2. If you think you RARELY or NEVER demonstrate this behavior, give yourself a 1. Write these numbers on the boxes on the page.
- Discuss your self-evaluation ratings with a peer.
- Complete the Student Achievement Goals worksheet. (Same document)
- Read about being responsible for yourself. Do you agree with these points? Put a + next to each point you agree with, a - next to each point you disagree with, and a ~ if you're half and half.
- This reflection activity is worth 10 points.
Step 5 - People with Grit
When we are trying to practice a new skill, it helps if we have models who can show us how it's done.
View the following videos that feature three individuals who have shown strong levels of GRIT and DETERMINATION.
As you view the videos, complete the organizer in Narrative Step 5 - Models of Determination. (Complete this as a PDF). Identify the main challenge each individual had to face and the achievement each individual has made. Finally, in the "1 Personal Trait to Copy" box, identify one personal trait you see in each individual that you could copy in order to gain more GRIT. In each "1 Personal Trait to Copy" box, also write a sentence explaining why that trait would be helpful for you to have.
